Gentleman — The German Reggae Ambassador
Introduction:
Born Tilmann Otto on 19 April 1974 in Cologne, Germany, Gentleman is the most internationally successful European reggae artist in history — a German musician who fell in love with Jamaican music as a teenager, made Jamaica his second home, and became a genuine star on the island itself. His 2004 album Confidence reached number one on the German album charts. He appeared on the Grammy Award-winning Toots and the Maytals album True Love (2004). His worldwide reggae hit "Superior" placed him on compilations across the US and Europe. And his 2016 collaborative album with Ky-Mani Marley cemented a relationship with Jamaica's music royalty that began with his very first visit to the island as a teenager.
A German Who Chose Jamaica:
Tilmann Otto first heard reggae through his brother's record collection — the sounds of Bob Marley, Dennis Brown and Peter Tosh reaching him in Cologne and sparking a love affair with Jamaican music that has never cooled. He began travelling to Jamaica regularly from the age of seventeen, immersing himself in the culture, the language and the music until he could speak Jamaican patois with genuine fluency and earn the respect of Jamaican artists as an equal rather than an outsider. "He's been coming to Jamaica since he was a youth," said Anthony B. "He knows the culture — it's genuine."
His career began in 1997 when German hip-hop group Freundeskreis asked him to contribute his singjay skills to their track "Tabula Rasa". His 1999 debut album Trodin On — a blend of dancehall and hip-hop — laid the foundation for what would become known as the "Germaican" movement. But the transformation came in 2002 with Journey to Jah, a deeply roots-oriented album inspired by the birth of his son. Featuring Morgan Heritage, Capleton and Luciano, produced by Richie Stephens and Bobby Digital, it earned him genuine respect from the reggae faithful worldwide.

German Chart-Topper & Jamaica's European Son:
His 2004 single "Superior" became a worldwide reggae hit. Confidence (2004) topped the German album charts. Another Intensity (2007) continued his run of acclaimed releases. His MTV Unplugged project (2015) demonstrated the depth and breadth of his catalogue. In 2016 Conversations with Ky-Mani Marley deepened his connection to the Marley family. His German-language album emerged from the popular TV show "Sing My Song", bringing him to new audiences at home. He has toured Costa Rica, South Africa, the Caribbean and Europe continuously for over two decades, always with his Evolution Band, always delivering the substance and quality that defines his reputation.
