Shelly Thunder — Kuff

Shelly Thunder - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Michelle Harrison-Timol on 23 February in Kingston, Jamaica, Shelly Thunder is a pioneering female dancehall deejay who broke new ground for women in Jamaican music — first in New York City's reggae scene and then internationally. She attended Harbour View Primary and Excelsior High School in Kingston before migrating to New York in 1980 at sixteen, where alongside Sister Carol she dominated the New York dancehall scene in the 1980s like no other female artists of that era. Her 1985 debut single "Shock Mi a Shock" on Music Master Records hit number one on the US reggae charts. Her 1988 Mango Records anthem "Kuff" — a fiercely feminist declaration produced by Henry Whitfield demanding accountability from unfaithful men — was an instant hit in Jamaica and became her signature record. She was described as the female equivalent of Shabba and Cutty Ranks. Her albums on Mango Records placed her alongside Super Cat, Patra and Shabba Ranks at the top of international dancehall. She later featured on Lauryn Hill's multi-Grammy-winning The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Brooklyn, Mango Records & The Voice of Dancehall Women:

Michelle Harrison grew up in Kingston attending Harbour View Primary and Excelsior High Schools before her family relocated to New York. A self-described tomboy, she fell in with the Brooklyn dancehall scene in the mid-1980s and began deejaying in 1985. Her debut single "Shock Mi a Shock" was an immediate chart-topper in the US reggae market, followed by "Small Horsewoman", "85 Vision" and "Man a Rush Me" — each building her reputation as a forceful, witty and uncompromising voice.

Her Mango Records debut album Fresh Out the Pack (1989) contained her breakthrough anthem "Kuff" — a Henry Whitfield production that became one of the most beloved feminist dancehall recordings of the late 1980s — alongside "Working Girl" and "Break Up to Make Up". Further albums Break Up (1989), Working Girl (1990) and Jump Around (1991) kept her at the top of the dancehall world. Women responded to her unapologetically strong stance; her male dancehall peers respected her lyrical power. In the early 1990s she became a born-again Christian and channelled her music into gospel, before later returning to performing. Her brother Stafford Ashani Harrison was a renowned Jamaican actor and playwright.
