Konshens — Good Girl Gone Bad
Introduction:
Born Garfield Delano Spence on 11 January 1985 in Kingston, Jamaica, Konshens is one of the most versatile, internationally successful and musically gifted dancehall and reggae artists of his generation. A singer, songwriter and deejay whose primary musical inspiration is Beres Hammond, Konshens has built a global following through a remarkable ability to move between conscious roots anthems, infectious bashment party tracks and cross-genre international collaborations — all with a vocal style entirely his own. His song "Gun Shot a Fire" was included on the official Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack. He was a brand ambassador for Pepsi. His 2016 smash "Bruk Off Yuh Back" received a Chris Brown remix. He featured on a Cardi B single and on an Rvssian Latin fusion track that went 6× Platinum with the RIAA.
Sojah, Pon Di Corner & The Solo Breakthrough:
Konshens began his musical journey alongside his brother Delus as one half of the duo Sojah, recording their first demos at the studio of the late reggae legend Sugar Minott. Their 2005 single "Pon Di Corner" — a call to recapture the community spirit of a less violent era — became a number one hit in Japan before it had even made a major impression at home, earning them a Japan-only album Sons of Jah and a full month-long Japanese tour. Sojah were stars in Tokyo before Kingston caught up.
Going solo in 2008, Konshens released "Winner" — an uplifting fusion of dancehall and hip-hop that became a huge hit in Jamaica. He launched his own Subkonshus label in 2010. His 2012 second album Mental Maintenance topped the iTunes Reggae Albums charts in Japan and Germany and placed in the Top 10 in several other countries. That same year's "Gal a Bubble" established his reputation as one of dancehall's most potent creators of floor-filling gyal tunes. His hit "Policeman" with Dutch EDM singer Eva Simons became a genuine international club anthem in 2015.
