Mr Vegas — Heads High

Mr Vegas - The Best Of (DOWNLAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Clifford Smith on 29 September 1974 in Kingston, Jamaica, Mr Vegas is one of the most versatile, resilient and internationally recognised singjay artists of the late 1990s and 2000s dancehall era. His 1998 debut single "Heads High" became a Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart hit. His 2000 follow-up "Hot Gal Today" peaked at number 66 on that same chart. His 2004 single "Pull Up" reached number 98 on the US Billboard Hot 100. He appeared on a Beyoncé Platinum Edition remix. His 2012 album Sweet Jamaica — released to mark Jamaica's 50th anniversary of independence — debuted at number 7 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and "Sweet Jamaica" was named Song of the Year at the International Reggae and World Music Awards in 2013. He later earned an associate degree from Broward College and graduated from Florida International University in 2022.

Nike Air, The Broken Jaw & The Breakthrough:

Clifford Smith grew up in Kingston and earned the nickname Mr Vegas from his school football team, who thought he kicked the ball like a Vegas showgirl. He began by singing cover versions of Jamaican classics at local parties with little success. His path changed dramatically after a visit to a local producer's home to reclaim a master tape ended with him receiving a crowbar blow to the jaw that left him sipping food through a straw for six weeks. During his recovery he heard Beenie Man's "Who Am I" and insisted on getting his jaw hardware removed so he could attempt to work the same riddim. Producer Jeremy Harding obliged, and the result was "Nike Air" — one of 1997–98's most infectious dancehall anthems.

"Heads High" — his debut Greensleeves album and title track — launched him internationally in 1998. His 2001 VP Records album Damn Right, featuring Shaggy, rose to number 2 on the US Reggae chart. "Pull Up" (2004) on Delicious Vinyl put him back on the Billboard Hot 100. His career has been marked throughout by genuine versatility: hard dancehall, lovers rock and conscious roots have all found space in his catalogue. He converted to Christianity in 2016 and released the gospel-oriented Soul Therapy in 2017.
