Ranking Dread — Girls Fiesta

Ranking Dread - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Winston Brown around 1955 in the parish of Trelawny, Jamaica, Ranking Dread was a reggae deejay who grew up in the Kingston ghettos of Rema and Tivoli, found his voice on the Ray Symbolic sound system in the 1970s, relocated to London where he worked with the legendary Lloyd Coxsone, and recorded four albums between 1978 and the early 1980s that placed him in the front rank of the late-roots and early-dancehall deejay era. Produced by Linval Thompson and Sugar Minott among others, his music captured the energy and spontaneity of Jamaica's sound system culture at its most vital. His 1978 debut Girls Fiesta — produced by Linval Thompson — and his early 1980s UK hit "Fattie Boom Boom" are the recordings for which he is best remembered by reggae collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. He died in 1996. His musical legacy is one of genuine creativity and the authentic voice of Kingston's streets, transferred to London's West Indian community.

Sound System Roots & London Years:

Winston Brown came up in the Kingston sound system culture — one of the most competitive musical arenas in the world — sharpening his deejaying skills on Ray Symbolic before the move to London brought him to Lloyd Coxsone's sound system, one of the foundational pillars of British reggae. Working with Linval Thompson, who produced many of the era's finest reggae recordings, Brown recorded Girls Fiesta in 1978 — his debut, and a genuine document of the period. His subsequent albums built on this foundation: Lots of Loving, his third album, was produced by Sugar Minott, bringing an additional dimension of warmth and lyrical rootsiness to his work.

"Fattie Boom Boom" gave him a minor UK chart success in the early 1980s, building on the growing audience for Jamaican deejay music in British reggae communities. His slurring, passionate vocal delivery and conversational style — a quality noted by collectors as making him one of the most distinctive deejays of his era — gave his recordings an energy that endures.
