Introduction:

Born Anthony Moses Davis on 22 August 1973 in the Waterhouse district of Kingston, Jamaica, Beenie Man is one of the most decorated, enduring and celebrated artists in the history of Jamaican music. Known as the "King of the Dancehall", he has been performing professionally since the age of five, winning a Grammy Award, scoring UK Top 10 hits, collaborating with Janet Jackson, Wyclef Jean and Mýa, and earning eight consecutive DJ of the Year awards in Jamaica. Few artists in any genre can match the span and consistency of his career.

 

A Child Prodigy:

Beenie Man's story begins earlier than almost any other major artist in reggae. Mentored by his uncle Sydney Knowles — who was also the drummer for reggae legend Jimmy Cliff — he was already toasting at the age of five. At eight, he won the national Teeny Talent contest, catching the attention of producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes, who recorded his debut single "Too Fancy". By 1983, at just ten years old, he had released his debut album The Invincible Beenie Man: The Ten Year Old DJ Wonder. He then made the remarkable decision to step back from the spotlight to focus on his education — a maturity that would serve his later career well.

The 1990s — Rise to Dominance:

Returning to the scene in the early 1990s, Beenie Man's 1992 performance at Reggae Sunsplash was a defining moment — a set so powerful that fans called him back on stage for five encores. His first Jamaican number one "Matie" came in 1993, and with it the first of eight consecutive DJ of the Year awards. A highly publicised rivalry with Bounty Killer only amplified both artists' profiles, and their 1994 clash album Guns Out became one of the most talked-about releases in dancehall history.His international breakthrough came in 1997 when he recorded "Who Am I (Sim Simma)" — a track that went Gold in the US, appeared in Newsweek and announced him to the world. The same year he topped Jamaica's singles chart with seven different singles simultaneously. In 1998 he headlined Reggae Sunsplash and signed to Virgin Records for the US market.

 

Grammy Glory & Global Crossover:

The peak of his commercial success came in 2000 with Art & Life, which featured collaborations with Wyclef Jean, Mýa, Kelis and jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval — winning the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. His 2002 duet with Janet Jackson "Feel It Boy" reached number 9 in the UK, and his 2004 hit "Dude" reached number 7. By then, the Associated Press had described him as a "name-brand artist worldwide" and the undisputed King of the Dancehall.
