Damian 'Jr Gong' Marley — Welcome to Jamrock

Damian 'JR Gong' Marley - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Damian Robert Nesta Marley (born 21 July 1978, Kingston, Jamaica) — known worldwide as Junior Gong — is the youngest son of Bob Marley, the recipient of four Grammy Awards, and one of the most important and artistically ambitious Jamaican musicians of his generation. He is the only Jamaican reggae artist in history to win two Grammy Awards on the same night, and the only reggae artist ever to win in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance category at the Grammy Awards. His 2005 single "Welcome to Jamrock" was named one of the Top 100 Songs of the Decade by Rolling Stone and called "the best reggae song of the decade" by the New York Times.

Born Into Music, Finding His Own Voice:

Damian was two years old when his father died. His mother is Cindy Breakspeare — Jamaican jazz singer and Miss World 1976 — and his nickname "Junior Gong" derives from Bob Marley's own nickname "Tuff Gong". Despite the weight of that inheritance, Damian has carved an entirely personal path — described by Apple Music as bringing "unmistakable gravitas to every project he touches." At thirteen he formed his first group, The Shepherds, with the children of other reggae stars including the son of Third World guitarist Cat Coore and the daughter of Freddie McGregor and Judy Mowatt. The group performed at Reggae Sunsplash in 1992 — an extraordinary debut.

His 1996 debut album Mr. Marley — released on his father's Tuff Gong label, produced by brother Stephen — surprised audiences with its dancehall and hip-hop fusion, announcing a Marley who deejayed rather than sang. Critics described it as unusual and exciting.

Grammy Gold & "Welcome to Jamrock:

His 2001 album Halfway Tree — named for the midpoint between his mother's wealthy neighbourhood and his father's poorer origins — spent 158 weeks on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart and won the 2002 Grammy for Best Reggae Album. But the defining moment came in 2005 with Welcome to Jamrock — a visceral, urgent portrait of Jamaica that combined the spiritual with the street. At the 2006 Grammy Awards it won both Best Reggae Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance. The album's success led to a groundbreaking 2010 collaboration with Nas, Distant Relatives, which debuted at number 5 on the Billboard Top 200 and number 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop, Rap and Reggae charts simultaneously. His 2017 album Stony Hill brought a fourth Grammy.

Key Albums:

  • Mr. Marley (1996) — debut
  • Halfway Tree (2001) — Grammy winner
  • Welcome to Jamrock (2005) — two Grammys in one night
  • Distant Relatives (2010, with Nas) — Billboard Top 5
  • Stony Hill (2017) — Grammy winner
