I-Wayne — Lava Ground
Introduction:
Born Cliffroy Taylor on 6 August 1980 in Portmore, Jamaica, I-Wayne is one of the most distinctive and important voices in the 21st-century roots reggae revival — a singer whose debut single "Can't Satisfy Her" made history as reportedly the first roots reggae song in years to be added to the playlist of New York's Hot 97, a station known for its hip-hop focus. His debut album Lava Ground (2005) was praised for returning to reggae's "essential roots." His second album Book of Life (2007) debuted at number 4 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Raised by his aunt and her husband Ansell Collins — renowned keyboardist of the legendary Dave & Ansell Collins duo — I-Wayne came to music through the deepest of reggae's roots.
Portmore Roots & Musical Heritage:
Growing up in the working-class Kingston suburb of Portmore, Cliffroy Taylor was immersed in live music from childhood through his guardian Ansell Collins. He began refining his craft from the age of seven, and as a student at Greater Portmore High School he joined a local group called Vibes Machine — performing at after-work parties at clubs including Cactus and Asylum. One night his bandmates were running late and I-Wayne performed alone. The crowd's response was overwhelming, and his motivation to perfect a solo career was set. His vocal style — sweet, jazz-inflected, deeply meditative, equal parts singing and chanting — was wholly his own.

Can't Satisfy Her & The Roots Revival:
His 2004 breakthrough single "Can't Satisfy Her" — a gritty, detailed social portrait delivered over a hypnotic roots riddim — topped reggae charts and reached Hot 97 in New York, introducing a new generation of American listeners to conscious reggae. His signing to VP Records led to the debut album Lava Ground in 2005, which AllMusic described as returning to reggae's essential roots. Tracks including "Living in Love", "Can't Satisfy Her" and the title track "Lava Ground" made him one of Jamaica's most talked-about artists. His second album Book of Life (2007) charted internationally. His third album Life Teachings (2011) — featuring Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare as well as his uncle Ansell Collins — brought the full weight of Jamaican music's heritage to bear on his most complete and soulful work to date.
