Ninjaman — Don Gorgon
Introduction:
Desmond John Ballentine (born 24 January 1966 in Annotto Bay, Jamaica), known universally as Ninjaman and by the self-bestowed title "Original Front Tooth, Gold Tooth, Gun Pon Tooth Don Gorgon", is one of the most original, theatrical and historically significant deejays in the entire history of Jamaican dancehall music. His stuttering, melodramatic, turbo-charged delivery — always seemingly on the verge of losing control yet always devastatingly precise — was unlike anything the music had heard before or has heard since. His hits of the late 1980s and early 1990s — "Murder Dem", "Permit to Bury", "My Weapon", "Cover Me", "Border Clash" — defined the hardcore dancehall era. His legendary 1990 Sting clash with Shabba Ranks is still discussed as one of the greatest live moments in Jamaican music history. He was mentored at Killamanjaro by Super Cat and Early B. He inspired a generation of artists who adopted ninja-themed names in his honour.
Annotto Bay to Killamanjaro:
Desmond Ballentine was born on the north coast of Jamaica in Saint Mary Parish and moved to Kingston at twelve. He began deejaying on the Black Culture sound system under the name Double Ugly, before joining the legendary Killamanjaro sound in 1980 — home to Super Cat and Early B, two of Jamaica's greatest deejays — where he worked his way up from Double Ugly to Uglyman before finally taking the name Ninjaman, inspired by the feudal Japanese ninja archetype: disciplined, deadly, impossible to pin down. His debut single "Protection" (1987), a duet with Courtney Melody, was self-produced on Harry J's Killamanjaro subsidiary. His 1988 hit "Cover Me" with veteran vocalist Tinga Stewart established him nationally.
From 1989 to 1992, Ninjaman dominated Jamaican dancehall — recording for King Jammy, Philip "Fatis" Burrell, Bobby Digital, Gussie Clarke and Steely & Clevie, and building a "badman" persona that was simultaneously feared and adored. His Sting 1990 clash with Shabba Ranks — an intensely personal lyrical showdown sparked by Ninja's fury at Shabba signing to Epic Records — was voted the event of the night and dubbed the Sting Super Clash. He also appeared in the 1999 Jamaican action film Third World Cop, which became the highest-grossing Jamaican film of its era.
